Between 1974 and 1975 the South African Railways (SAR), later renamed Spoornet and then Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), placed 100 Class 6E1, Series 5 locomotives in service. One of these was later withdrawn from revenue service for use as an experimental 25kV AC locomotive. The South African Class 6E1 Series 5 3kV DC electric locomotive was designed and built by Union Carriage and Wagon (UCW) in in Nigel, Transvaal.
